8th SIKS/Twente Seminar on Searching and Ranking Explorations in
Interactive Retrieval and Information Experience

*Fully sponsored; no registration fee*

Thursday August 29, 2013, 13:00h-16:00h University of Twente,
Human Media Interaction group Enschede, The Netherlands

*Summary* The experience of users during the interaction with
information systems (e.g., Google, Yahoo!, and Bing) is not
always optimal. How to provide users with a positive information
experience (IX) is still an open question. A better understanding
of how and why people search for information and what factors
determine a positive IX is expected to contribute to the
increased effectiveness of information systems. This seminar will
address the issue from several perspectives. Experimental
research on cognitive aspects of task-based user-system
interaction will be discussed, paradigms for interactive
retrieval will be reviewed and research will be presented into
the design, modeling and evaluation of information access
systems, user interfaces and user interaction. Following the
seminar, Frans van der Sluis will defend his PhD-thesis, titled
"When Complexity becomes Interesting: An Inquiry into the
Information eXperience".
