Since no participant met all the criteria considered by the jury, two winners were chosen: 

- Joćo Valente for his contrition with Arminda Guerra entitled Gestual Language Introduction
- Tao Jianhua for his contribution with Cai Lianhong, Wu Zhiyong, Wang Zhiming entitled Wise Assistant and Voice Gateway Based on Chinese TTS system SinoSonic


Human language technologies are coming of age. ELSNET now challenges the young generation to come with new, imaginative, creative or even crazy ideas for innovative applications using speech and language technology.

Demonstrate or simulate such an application at Eurospeech2001 - Scandinavia, September 3-7, in Aalborg, Denmark, in the IMAGINATION2001 contest in which you can win

We welcome proposals in every area of communication, all modalities included, as long as speech and language play a significant role. You might think of imaginative applications in the fields of aids for handicapped, games, education, wireless communication systems, performing arts, internet, agents and avatars, ambient intelligence, etc.

All registrants to Eurospeech2001, less than 35 years of age at the time of the conference, can participate (also as group effort).

Deadline for submission of a one page A4 abstract is July 1, 2001. However, for organisational reasons we would appreciate to receive a message of intent by March 30, 2001.

All submissions within the scope of the contest will be accepted. You're supposed to demonstrate and explain your ideas personally at Eurospeech2001 - Scandinavia.

A jury will judge the ideas of feasibility, creativeness and originality.

The IMAGINATION2001 event will take place during the afternoon of Tuesday September 4, 2001. You are expected to bring your laptop and we provide a poster board, a table, internet connection and video projection (shared use). Please, notify us if you need additional help from our side.

Participation in IMAGINATION2001 does not exclude your possibility to submit a full and final paper on the same subject as a regular contribution to the Eurospeech2001 - Scandinavia conference (deadline March 30, 2001). See the conference paper submission procedure (click below).
  
All participants of IMAGINATION2001 will be invited to submit a paper to the International Journal of Speech Technology. A special issue of the journal will be devoted to IMAGINATION2001.

Authors could emphasize any or all of the following in their manuscripts:

  • technology development in service of the application's design
  • the design methodology employed in developing the application
  • testing and evaluation of the application
  • human factors considerations/user interface issues with respect to the application's design, and how these were managed
  • issues (and their management) that arose during implementation of the application with "real" users
  • data/evidence regarding the success of the application
