The AI group of the Department of Computer Science, Systems and
Production, University of Rome Tor Vergata (ITALY), from a long while
involved in reasearches in Lexical Acquisition, Machine Laerning and
Engineering of adaptive NLP systems, is looking for an experienced
computer scientist interested in joining the AI group in Rome for an
international (state-of-art reasearch & development) project in the
area of text processing for Information Extraction and Filtering.

The project's specific goal is multilingual (English, Spanish and
Italian) extraction of information from Web documents. The AI group
that will host the candidate has a long lasting tradition in the
engineering of NLP systems, and is currently integrating its existing
systems for Lexical Acquisition and Text Processing in Italian and
English into an industrial prototype.

A qualified candidate must have preferably a PhD degree, on Computer Science,
Software Engineering or Computational Linguistics, with extensive
programming experience in at least one of the following languages: C++, Java
and Prolog. It is highly preferred a strong background in software
engineering of large-scale text processing systems and ability on
innovative approaches in natural language (statistical as well as symbolic
methods).  Although this is not a job for theoreticians only, a specific
talent for research problems, experimental studies and familiarity with the
empirical methods in NL are a plus.

Candidate should know very well UNIX  and in general be a skilled programmer.
Knowledge of Java programming under Windows NT is a relevant aspect, but
not necessary. 

The position corresponds to a contract of the University of Roma, Tor
Vergata for (at least) one year (March 1998-March 1999): salary and
conditions are equivalent to the position of a resarcher in the University.
