In the 1990s, SLS research stimulated a number of
commercial ventures, such as BellSouth's revamped electronic yellow
pages, which provide information by phone on restaurants, stock
quotes, and automobile classified ads; and Applied Language
Technology, which has developed conversational systems for telephone
banking, investing, and travel planning. Today SLS researchers are
refining GALAXY's (a conversational platform) core technologies and
extending its range of applications and languages. They are working to
upgrade the efficiency of application-specific conversations, improve
new word detection/learning capability during speech recognition, and
increase the portability of its core technologies and application
systems.
