Human Language Technology Center (HLTC) is an Emerging
High Impact Area research center at HKUST specializing in speech and
signal processing, statistical and corpus-based NLP, machine
translation, information extraction, Chinese language processing, and
related fields. HLTC is led by eight faculty members from the EEE and
the CS departments: Oscar Au, Roland Chin, Pascale Fung, Kok Wee Gan,
Brian Mak, Bertram Shi, Manhung Siu, and Dekai Wu.
HLTC's mission is to lead new state-of-the-art research directions
that drive the development of new applications in the area of language
and speech technology. Special emphasis is given to machine processing
of Chinese language and Chinese information. Systems built at HLTC
include automated language translation for the Internet, speech-based
web browsing, and speech recognition for the telephone.
