B.S.U.I.R. - Belarus State University of Informatics and RadioElectronics is one of the leading belarusian universities in the area of computer science. Students study for five years to get diploma which corresponds approximately to the Bachelor degree. B.S.U.I.R consists of 6 faculties with about 7000 students and 200 PhD students. The Department of Intelligent Information Technologies belongs to the Faculty of Information Technologies and Control. It was formed in early 1997 as a result of merge of the Department of Intelligent Computer Systems and the Department of Automated Control Systems. It has two specialities for students: Artificial Intelligence and Automated Control, 50 students being enlisted to each of them every school year. This is the first educational institution in the former Soviet Union specializing in the area of Artificial Intelligence in general and Natural Language and Speech Processing in particular. This specialization is provided by the Artificial Intelligence speciality which started its educational activities in 1995 and now involves 25 3-rd years students, 25 2-nd year students and 50 1-st year students. The schedule of courses of this speciality includes Speech Interface (the 4th year of studies), Computer Linguistics and Natural Language Interface (4th), Theoretical Foundations of Learning and Recognition (3rd), Plausible Reasoning (3rd) and more than 20 other courses dealing with formal models, languages and architectures for knowledge processing and applications of intelligent computer systems. The Department combines tutorial and research activities by involving professors and students in several R&D projects dealing with application of software and hardware tools for processing large and complicated knowledge bases.
