EACL 2003 Workshop on "Computational Linguistics for South Asian
Languages -- Expanding Synergies with Europe"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Call for Papers and participation
=================================================
Monday April 14 2003, Agro Hotel, Budapest, Hungary.
To be held in conjunction with the EACL 2003 conference
– see
The Context
-------------
The languages of South Asia, which include many of the major languages
of humanity, are also important minority languages in Europe and many
other parts of the world. Much mutual benefit will be gained by exploring
and expanding synergy between Europe and South Asia in the area of
computational linguistics for these languages.
Format of the workshop
------------------------
The workshop will open with a keynote address from Prof Aravind Joshi
following which we will have a number of sessions each addressing some
key issue. Each session will be introduced by a short presentation from
some member of the workshop, and be expected to reach some
conclusion about the current state of computational linguistics for South
Asian languages and what the important future work is. By the end of
the workshop we hope to have evolved a common roadmap for the
growth of computational linguistics of these languages.
Call for Papers and participation
---------------------------------
Participation will be by invitation based on submitted papers. Papers,
which may be either full papers or position papers as described later,
are invited on all aspects of computational linguistics relevant to the
context of the workshop, including, but not limited to, the following main
areas:
1. Language Models, Tools and Applications: Work bringing
out commonalities and differences in the processing of the
languages of Europe and South Asia:
a) Adaptation of models, tools and applications
` developed for European languages to South
Asian languages.
b) Models, tools and applications specifically
designed for South Asian languages, and their
adaptation to European languages.
2. Development of Lexical Resources: Work in language
engineering, with particular focus on collaborative
development of lexical resources, and standards and
tools for processing South Asian languages:
a) Text corpora and associated tools, standards
and techniques.
b) Large-scale electronic dictionaries, lexicons
and Wordnets.
c) Speech corpora and associated tools,
standards and techniques.
*Full papers* may be up to 8 A4 pages (Times 10 point), and should
cover substantial, original and unpublished work. They should describe
completed work rather than intended work, and should indicate clearly
the state of completion of the reported results. Wherever appropriate,
concrete evaluation results should be included.
*Position papers* should be 2 or 3 A4 pages (Times 10 point) and may
cover work in progress, exhibiting competence and interest in the area
of the workshop.
Papers should be in English, using the EACL 2003 submission formats
available from .
Lengths given above include references, tables, figures and equations.
Where non-Latin scripts are used, they should either be included as
figures (preferred), or all the relevant font(s) and any other necessary
files along with instructions, should be attached as annexes to the
paper, to enable correct viewing and printing of the paper. Full papers
should include an abstract of about 150 words. Papers outside the
specified length may be subject to rejection without review.
Accepted papers of those who attend will be published in the workshop
proceedings. A small number of people may be invited to present their
papers or related work during the workshop, as part of the process of the
workshop arriving at its findings. Following the workshop a report will
be produced by the organisers and included in the proceedings.
Submission
-----------
All submissions should indicate clearly whether they are full papers or
position papers. Submissions should be in electronic form, and MUST
be either in PS or PDF. They should be sent by email to both the two
workshop co-ordinators whose addresses are given in Contact
Information at the end.
Deadlines
----------
Paper submissions deadline: January 7, 2003
Notification of acceptance: January 28, 2003
Camera ready papers due: February 13, 2003
Workshop Date: April 14, 2003
Fees and Financial Support
---------------------------
The registration fees for the workshop will be announced later.
Financial support for travel, stay and registration for the workshop is
available for a small number of persons travelling from South Asia or
within Europe. Support will come from separate funds made available
from the European Union under the SCALLA project
ASI/B7-301/97/0126-05. Please indicate in your covering email with
your submission whether you are seeking such financial support, and
whether your participation will be dependent upon such support.
