Press Release 31 August 2004 London, UK LTC WINS JOINT EUROPEAN TRANSLATION CONTRACTS - MALTESE The Language Technology Centre Ltd (LTC), a global leader in the language industry, announced today that it has won framework contracts with the Translation Centre for the Bodies of the European Union for the provision of the translation of trademarks from Czech, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Hungarian, Polish, Slovak, and Swedish into Maltese. The use of a relay language, in this case English, became necessary for this project because of the scarcity of Maltese native speakers who understand the required languages. As such, LTC has teamed up with a Maltese partner agency which is well known for their excellent services and high linguistic standards. The project is organised in two phases. In the first phase, LTC linguists translate the various source languages into English. In the second phase of the project, the Maltese experts take over, translating the texts from English into the target language-Maltese. This way, the linguistic quality of the texts is guaranteed and is maintained throughout all stages of the project. The Translation Centre for the Bodies of the European Union uses ESTeam TranslatorÓ software to assure a smooth process flow and efficiency on the organisational side of the project. LTC who already successfully signed several major contracts with several bodies of the European Union sees the latest assignments as a continuation of the successful relationship between LTC and several EU institutions in the field of translation services and consultancy. About the Translation Centre for the Bodies of the European Union Established in 1994, the Translation Centre's mission is to meet the translation needs of the other decentralised Community agencies. In addition it participates in the Interinstitutional Committee for Translation, which is working to promote collaboration between the services based on the principle of subsidiarity and to achieve economies of scale in the translation field. The Centre is established in Luxembourg and is an agency governed by European public law, with legal personality. It has its own financial resources constituted by the transfers from the agencies, offices and institutions in exchange for services provided. Since the start-up of its activities in 1995, the Centre has gradually organised its services and administrative procedures and strengthened its operational capacity to respond to the increased workload. By way of comparison, the number of pages translated has risen from 20 000 in 1995 to over 280 000 in 2001. This rapid growth in activities has gone hand in hand with an increase in the Centre's staff, which now numbers over 140 staff members.
