Research Activities pursued at the organisation
The main sphere of scientific activities of the Department is general and Lithuanian phonology and phonetics with special attention to the dialectal phenomena, because Lithuanian language is distinguished by great diversity of dialects. Besides that some members of the Department cooperate with mathematicians and psychologists in the field of the synthesis of speech; as a result of this cooperation a Lithuanian speech-synthesizer was constructed, enabling, for example, the blind and weak-sighted persons to use the computers for their needs. The synthesizer is based on the so-called concatenative principle (the spoken texts are generated from the allophones cut out of natural utterances).
