The Natural Language Department of theComputer Science Institute is one of the most important department of the Institute. The research projects developed at the NLP Department involve morphological analysers, parsers and lexicon design.

Research projects Knowledge base for the Romanian language. A team of 6 researchers are involved in this four-year project started in January 1995. The main goal of this project is to develop a knowledge database for the Romanian language. The system contains tools for par sing (a morphological analyzer, a syntactic parser based on Tomita algorithm) and for generating natural language text. The formalism choosen for representing knowledge (dictionary entries and grammar rules) is HPSG (Head-driven Phrase Structured Grammar) . The dictionary is hierarchically structured and it completion is in progress. This project involves a team of researchers from the "Al.Philippide" Linguistics Institute of the Romanian Academy.

A Dictionary for the Romanian language. A team of 4 researchers are involved in this three-year project started in January 1996. A framework was designed for the development of a complete dictionary for the Romanian language. The implementation of the use r interface, logical organization of the dictionary and the access functions to the database are developped at this moment. The user interface is menu-driven and has Windows-like controls. It was implemented in Microsoft Visual C++. The access functions w ere written in C. The semi-automatic aquisition of the data will be done thru a dictionary parser which analyze a machine-readable dictionary. The machine-readable dictionary will be build using a scanner and an OCR software.

Since this description will be stored as a free text and be made accessible by means of text retrieval systems it is important that you use the appropriate (English) key words and phrases.
