The department is an educational and research institution the Head of Dptm. being T.V. Gamkrelidze. Research projects have been based on the principles of post-Saususurean linguistics. Phonological theories, morphological taxonomy, Chomskian grammar, V. Ingve's hypothesis of diachronic transformations, general problems of semantics, stylistics, typology etc. have been studied during some 30 years of our existence. Students are besides taught structural analysis of North Caucasion languages, Old and New Georgian. To outstanding achievements belong the publishing of T. Gamkrelidze, V. Ivanov's "Indo-European and the Indo-Europians" by Mouton De Gruyter in 1995. (In the series Trends in Linguistics Studies in Monographs 80)
The research projects of the department concern studies of various theoretical problems of linguistics; besides a course of theoretical linguistics - Phonology, Descriptive Linguistics, Generative Grammars, Typology and Historical Linguistics - is being prepared for publishing (in Georgian).
