The Computational Linguistics (CL) and Machine Translation
(MT) Group is a research group in the Department of Language and
Linguistics at the University of Essex. It serves as a focus for
research in computational, and computationally oriented, linguistics.
It has been in existence since the late 1980s, and has played a role
in a number of important Computational Linguistics research projects.
It currently consists of about 5 members of staff, and a number of PhD
and Masters students under supervision. Of the staff, Doug Arnold, who
leads the group, and Louisa Sadler are on the permanent staff of the
University, the others are Research Officers. Members of the group are
involved in teaching courses in Programming, Natural Language
Processing, Syntax, and Semantics to students in the Departments of
Language and Linguistics and Computer Science following, inter alia,
the MA in Computational Linguistics and the MSc (in Natural Language
Processing), as well as other, non-computational degree schemes in
Language and Linguistics. The group has strong links with a number of
other research groups in the UK and Europe, with whom we have
collaborated on a number of projects over the years: in particular,
the Centre for Computational Linguistics at UMIST (Manchester), the
Institut fur Angewandte Informationsforschung (IAI) in the University
of Saarbruecken, the DFKI (German Research Centre for Artificial
Intelligence), the TAAL Technologie Group in the University of
Utrecht, and the Centre for the Study of Language and Computation in
the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
