Call for Papers Internet Technologies for Language Applications A Workshop at "Berlin XML Days 2003" October 15, 2003 Humboldt-University Berlin (Germany) Since the first VoiceXML standard was established in 2000, the move toward industrial development of speech dialogue systems has gained momentum. Many systems have been developed and implemented in real applications; also, the standard was developed further (VoiceXML 2.0), and SALT has been proposed as an alternative framework that places more emphasis on combination with web technology. The workshop aims at surveying the current situation: How well was VoiceXML accepted in industry, research and education? Which kind of applications have been succesfully implemented? Specifically, an evaluation from both the industrial and the scientific viewpoint is desired: What deficits can be identified from the perspective of industrial application building? How wide is the gap between computational linguistics research on "ideal" dialogue systems, and the state of the art in practical development? At the beginning of the workshop, there will be a brief tutorial on comparing VoiceXML and SALT, by Jin Liu (T-Systems, Berlin). We invite paper submissions that report experiences with implementing VoiceXML/SALT-based systems, and/or provide critical assessments of the standards and the technology. Either the perspective of language processing or that of implementation technology can be focus of the paper. Workshop languages are German and English. Submssions must be original work and not been published elsewhere. All submissions will be reviewed by the program committee (see below); accepted papers will be published in the Proceedings of the Berlin XML Days 2003 (Springer Verlag). For submissions, use the format instructions of the "GI-Series Lecture Notes in Informatics." http://www. gi-ev.de/LNI/autorenrichtlinien/index.html Word/Latex macros are provided there. Maximum length is 8 pages. Please send your paper in PDF to either of the two organizers (see below).
