Family name: Demenko
Maiden name: Surmanowicz
Place of birth: Kalisz, Poland
Education
The degrees she obtained were as follows: MA in Automatics from the
Technical University of Poznan, PhD in Engineering Sciences,
Speech Acoustic, from the Institute of Fundamental Technological
Research, Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw and dr hab. in
Linguistics from the Institute of Linguistics of Adam Mickiewicz
University in Poznan.
Employement
She started her professional work in the Acoustic Research Unit of
the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research of the Polish
Academy of Sciences in 1977. Between 1989 and 1992 she worked at the
Institute of Phonetics and Communications Research in Bonn and in
Cologne, as well as University College London, as a Humboldt-Stiftung
scholar. Currently she is a Professor at the Institute of Linguistics
of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan.
Scholarly and Professional Activities
Professional achievements: She is the author or co-author of 70 papers
connected with the speech technology, and with the phonetic-acoustic
methods in medicine. The results of the modelling of the intonation
phrase in Polish she presented in monograph Polish Language
Suprasegmental Features Analysis for the Needs of Speech Technology,
which was awarded the Scientific Prize of the Dep. of Technological
Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In the years 1990-1994
she participated in the project aimed to create system of the
text-to-speech synthesis, which was awarded the Quality Mark. Until
today, it is the only such synthesis system for the Polish language.
In the years 1993-1996, she carried on simultaneous works aimed to
practical application of the acoustic research in medicine. For the
needs of the speech audiometry she developed audiometric and hearing
tests. After several years of testing, both audiometric and hearing
tests for rehabilitation gained positive opinion of audiologists and
they are now implemented at many medical centres in the country and
used in practical selection of hearing aid devices.
Reasearch Projects: In 1994 she participated in the international Verbmobil
project (theme No. 15.5: Prosody in Spoken Interaktion). In the years
1995-1999 she coordinated team researches within 2 individual projects
financed by KBN- Polish research Committee, and in 3 grants of the Polish
Phonetic Sciences Society. Under the international project CRIT2 (ESPRIT)
Computer analysis and synthesis of suprasegmental structures in
communication systems she conducted intensive research aimed to develop
intonation synthesis rules (http://www.ipipan.waw.pl/crit2/crit2.htm). At
present, she is engaged on projects in the area of Speech Synthesis
(Concatenative Speech Synthesis System for Polish).
Educational Activity: Programming and Computer Science, Fundamentals
of the Phonetics and Acoustics , Speech Processing, Speech Audiometry.
Editorial Boards: She is involved in editing activities of the
International Journal of Speech Technology, Kluwer Academic Publishers and
the Polish Phonetic Sciences Society (Publicational series: Speech and
Language Technology).
Organisational Activity
She is the President of the Polish Phonetic Sciences Society (PTFon) and a
member of many scientific societies: PTA - Polish Acoustic Sciences Society,
ISPhS - International Society of Phonetic Sciences, International Speech
Communication Association (ISCA), SHP - Societas Humboldiana Polonorum. She
is a member of the Acoustics Commission at IV Department of Techological
Sciences Polish Academy of Science. For detailed descripton of the PTFon
acivities please visit www page http://main.amu.edu.pl/fonetyka.
In the years 1980-1988 she co-organised or organised training
courses "Analysis, Synthesis and Speech Recognition" and Scientific
Meetings of the Polish Phonetic Sciences Society "Linguistic,
Medical and Technological Phonetics". In 2000, she organized
International Workshop PROSODY'2000: speech recognition and synthesis
in Cracow.
